Questions and answers

Do I need an exam if I see fine?

Yes. Some eye conditions cause no symptoms early on, and a child can see blurry for years without saying so.

How often should we come?

Most children and adults have an exam every year. Your doctor may suggest a different schedule.

What is myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, means distant things look blurry while near things stay clear. It often starts in the school years, and the prescription can change as a child grows.

Who is myopia care for?

The doctor decides after an evaluation, looking at age, prescription, how fast it is changing and what your family can manage every day.

What is FDA-authorized and what is off-label?

One kind of daily contact lens is FDA-authorized for children 8 to 12 at the start of treatment, and one eyeglass lens design for children 6 to 12. Other options are used off-label, which means a doctor uses an approved product for a purpose the FDA has not reviewed. Results vary, and the doctor explains the risks of each.

Do you work with my vision plan?

We work with many vision plans. Call us to confirm yours, and we will check your benefits before the visit.

Why was part of my visit billed to medical insurance?

A visit about an eye problem, an eye disease or myopia progress is a medical visit, and medical insurance usually pays for it. A routine exam is billed to a vision plan. How fees work explains the split.

How much will it cost?

It depends on your plans and on what you choose. We give you a written estimate before you pay for anything yourself. See How fees work.

Can I fill my prescription somewhere else?

Yes. Your prescription is yours. We give you a copy after your exam and fitting, and you can fill it anywhere.
